Sometimes We All Need a Little Silly

Sometimes my kids have sour attitudes.  Sometimes I just can't get them out of it.  It's those times I have to bring out the secret weapon:  I have to speak whale.

Seriously.  I'm not kidding.  Just like Dory, I speak whale.  And not just one species.  I speak many, many species of whale.  Just ask my kids.  It brings a smile every time.

Do you have a secret weapon like that?  Is there something that you can say or do to make even an angry kid smile?  Usually it's not very flattering.  It most likely makes you look silly or crazy.  Mine does.  Speaking whale is neither quiet nor reserved.  It is 100% ridiculous.  That's why it gets the smile.

There are three kids who can tap into that crazy streak in me, three girls worth the price of looking corny.  It doesn't mean that the circumstances they find themselves in change, but it does mean that we can address the issue without anger, mean words or disrespectful tones.  If we have a hard situation to deal with, poor attitudes will only make it worse.  Might as well speak a little whale and feel better about the whole thing.

Keeping attitudes light is not the same thing as making light of a serious situation.  I believe you can smile through tears and laugh through heartache.  Life can be full of some tough breaks.  That doesn't mean it has to break our spirit.  The Bible says, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones" (Proverbs 17:22).

This week try to handle those trying times with a little laughter, or at least with a smile.  Life can be hard, but our days don't have to be.  It's all in our outlook.  Let's help the little ones that watch us daily see our merry hearts.  It will do them good.  It will do us good.

I love that we can get silly.  I love that my girls will get silly with me.  I'm slowly teaching them the whale language.  Pretty soon they will be fluent.  I can just tell.  They're naturals.
